My Expat Life Journey
Hello, my name is Shingie. I am an expat-supporting-spouse turned work-at-home mum currently living in Turkey.
My mission on this blog is to inspire ex-pat spouses like you to find new passions as I did and hopefully earn money while at it, no matter where on the globe you find yourself living temporarily. I fully understand the challenges that come with this life. It can be quite a struggle for us as supporting spouses to find the regular 9–5 and be able to juggle that with helping everyone settle into the new location. And if you have young kids like me, you are probably looking for alternatives as I am. If this blog gives hope to one, or even two people that they do not have to be limited by their location or duration of the contract, then I will have accomplished my mission.
Three years ago, I and my young family made the bold move to leave our beautiful country of Zimbabwe, to go and live in Jordan. It was not so much a search for greener pastures for us. Our family was losing one income stream because I had to quit my job. Strictly speaking, if you know Zimbabwe you will know just how much more greenery is there compared to Jordan, which is mostly desert haha.
The thing is, my husband had been working abroad for about two years at that time. We really felt it was best for us to be all in one place. We had prayed for him to either get a job back home or get a job posting that would cater for the family to be together. The latter prayer was answered first and we jumped onto the opportunity head-on. We had never taken such a giant leap of faith before. It was scary, but exciting because we could all be unified in one place again.
Having been a professional mum all my life, I was pretty confident I would get a job as soon as we were all settled in the new location. My plan was to effectively use the settling year to finish my final graduate training year, then hit the ground running with job searches.
However, as the months went by, I was pretty sure seeking formal employment was not the best option for me. Given the different cultures, languages and how the transition period was going with my kids. Getting someone to care for my kids while I went to work would probably have undone all the benefits of our move. I knew I had to find another way.
I have decided to share my journey on the path I took to reinvent myself and establish an online business. Deciding to go on this adventure has allowed me to gain both time and financial freedom. Now I can enjoy the opportunity of being one of the constants for my children as we move around. All this because of the flexibility that an online business comes with.
I will share coping, survival and thriving strategies, opportunities and lessons learnt along the way. It is my hope that it will somehow flatten the steepness of your own learning curves on your journey, be it as an ex-pat or an online entrepreneur.
Do you desire time freedom and the potential added bonus of financial freedom in the long run? Take a chance and join me on this exciting journey and reinvent yourself wherever you find yourself planted right now. You will be in awe of what you can create if you take the step to break out of your cocoon!
